What song got you hooked on your favorite band?
Godsmack - I first saw them on MTV's summer show in 1997. They were playing live during some stupid game show MTV was producing that summer, but they were never the showcase. They'd play a song while they went to commercial, and stuff like that. Then, at the end, they had a chance to perform one whole song, before the show ended. It was Whatever. Possibly the best rock song of the 1990's, and I'll argue it with just about anyone. I was 13, going on 14, and the lyrics to the song, and the agression behind the music spoke to me. I didn't hear anything else from them, until mid-98, when their debut album was released, and we got a video for Whatever, followed by a video for Keep Away. Those two songs got me hooked, and the rest is history.
In This Moment - I had tickets to see Kittie, Walls Of Jericho, 3 Inches Of Blood, and 36 Crazyfists. There was 2 or 3 other bands scheduled, but the show got postponed due to a horrible snowstorm. When it was rescheduled, 36 Crazyfists was on tour in Europe, so In This Moment got the other co-headlining spot, alongside WOJ and Kittie. When they started, I realized they were good, but was having way too much fun in the pit to pay attention. Then, they played Legacy Of Odio, and I can honestly say I felt moved. There's a long history behind the song, but the short form is that she wrote it for a friend of her's that had passed away. It gave me chills, and silenced a very hot crowd. They almost couldn't finish, because she had started crying midway through the song. After that song, they played Next Life, which is on the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to music. While the first one is soft, and very melodic, Next Life is very powerful, and has some of the best screams I've heard from a female lead singer in a while. The crowd went from standing still, to creating a huge circle pit, and she absolutely dominated. On the CD, there's a scream towards the end, that lasts 22 seconds. People told me it was a fake. Well live, she did it longer, in one breath. Her face was turning purple, and the music was done before she stopped. I bought the CD at the merch stand, and now their name is tattooed on my arm.
